Okay But Can We Talk About the Painswick Courts??
So I need to vent for a second, because this summer has been WILD. Every single time — and I mean every time — I go play pickleball with my friends after work, someone decides to make it their personal mission to ruin our little post-work happy hour on the court. We just want to hit the ball around for an hour! Is that so much to ask gtfo.

Here’s the thing. I am obsessed with pickleball. OBSESSED. It’s the best part of my week, honestly. You get there, the sun’s still out, your friends are there, you’re laughing, you’re sweating a little, it’s perfect. Until. Some random middle-aged club member strolls onto the court, mid-rally, to explain rules we already know backwards and forwards. Like sir. Sir.
One guy practically had a meltdown at us about “taking turns” while THREE other courts sat completely empty next to us. Empty!! Nobody waiting, nobody watching, just… empty courts. And he’s over here acting like we personally stole his lunch. Today’s incident really took the cake though — a woman marched onto our court mid-serve (mid-serve!!) and told us we had to leave because it was “a club court.” Except it wasn’t club time yet. Not for another fifteen minutes! When we gently pointed that out, she admitted it, but did she apologize? Did she scoot along nicely? No. She just kind of huffed off, vibes still hostile. Okay boomer.
Can I just say — this is exactly the kind of thing that decent pickleball booking software would fix in like five minutes?? A screen at the courts, an app, literally anything showing real, live reservation times so nobody has to play detective or get yelled at mid-serve by a stranger who’s decided she owns public property. It’s not that complicated! Other towns are figuring this out. Places like Collingwood are pouring money into brand new indoor courts, Meaford’s got their pay-to-play setup humming along, there are drop-in programs popping up all over the region. So the demand is clearly there, the infrastructure conversation is clearly happening — Painswick just needs to catch up already.
Honestly, what gets me the most isn’t even the individual moments, annoying as they are. It’s the bigger feeling underneath it. Free public spaces where you can just show up and be social and active without paying for a membership are RARE once you’re in your twenties. Everyone’s calendars are a mess, everyone’s scattered, and pickleball has genuinely been this easy, joyful way to see my friends. Getting scolded like a trespasser on a court I’m 100% allowed to be on chips away at that in this really quiet, annoying way. Like the space isn’t actually mine to enjoy, even though it is!
Anyways. I don’t think these people are secretly evil or anything, they probably think they’re “keeping order”/ nimbys or whatever. But that doesn’t give anyone the right to bully strangers off a public court. So Barrie Pickleball Club, if you’re listening: fix your signage, post your actual schedule somewhere visible, and please, PLEASE tell your members to stop treating the public like intruders. We just want to play!!
